Phonevong could no longer ignore the tumour under his chin. It seemed to grow bigger each day. Several visits to the specialist confirmed his worst fears. The tumour would have to be removed surgically and the doctor suspected cancer.

Worried sick, Phonevong approached Chinda Kommala, lay leader at Lao Canadian Evangelical Mennonite Church (LCEMC). Although Phonevong had been attending LCEMC since the day it began, he was unsure about giving his life wholeheartedly to following Jesus. Now, facing a major crisis in his life, he made a promise to God, “If you heal me, I will follow you one hundred percent.”

Chinda listened as Phonevong shared the doctor’s report. He suggested an anointing service emphasizing that only God has the power to heal. The entire church was in prayer for Phonevong. The surgery went well and the tumour was sent for testing. Phonevong cried and hugged Chinda Kommala when he heard the result. The tumour was cancer free!

Phonevong believes that God spared his life and has fully committed to following Christ. He is learning about baptism and plans to take this step of publicly declaring his faith. His father and sister now attend church services thanks to Phonevong’s influence. Chinda sums up Phonevong’s new outlook, “He has a heart to serve God.”
