Pizza and Peace

Peace and fun were found at Rockway Mennonite Collegiate in November at the MCEC Junior Youth Breakaway.

Two hundred and forty junior youth and their sponsors explored the issue of peace under the theme of “Footprints in the Sand.” Mamoon Chakhansuri, a refugee from Afghanistan, compared his journey of going to school in Afghanistan to the students going to school here in North America. He challenged them to think about how it feels to be safe – an experience he did not have growing up.

The students further reflected on refugees and war as they entered into the life of a young girl’s struggle as her existence was torn apart by war, through the drama Red Red Shoes, written by Charles Way, and presented by Rockway Grade 9 – 10 students.

To further the image of footprints, students were asked to remove their shoes and place them in the centre of the gym. As shoes were placed one by one on the floor, a peace sign slowly emerged. One student, in reporting to his congregation, astutely remarked that the created peace sign “showed that you can take peace with you no matter where you go.” The junior youth of the MCEC community of congregations left that day inspired to extend the peace of Jesus Christ to the world around them.
