Lucy Roca Officially Licensed
Lucy Roca was licensed as a pastor August 23, 2009 at Refugio de Paz in Quebec. Roca is a church planter and former refugee from Columbia.
Her spiritual journey began 3 years ago when Lucy and her three daughters arrived on Canadian soil as refugees. Before her move to Canada, Lucy was a social worker in Columbia, but the Columbian Mennonite Church saw her potential and commissioned her to work as a church planter in Winnipeg with MC Canada.
An emotional and beautiful ceremony was preached by Muriel Bechtel, conference minister at MCEC and a covenant with God and Roca’s congregation was made. Lucy was joined in a confirmation likened to a marriage vow in which Lucy and her congregation made a covenant to help one another, a covenant that struck the heart strings of all who attended.

Hans Peters, a close friend of Lucy Roca’s, translated Muriel’s words into Spanish for the 75 Spanish-speaking congregation members. The Mission Minister, Brian Bauman, joined the group in the laying of hands and a group prayer for Lucy and her church members.
Lucy has started 2 Spanish-speaking house churches in Quebec, one in Montreal and another in Sherbrooke, where Lucy and her family live today. Refugio de Paz’s recognition of Lucy’s hard work in the last 2-3 years was the end result of their sincere belief that Lucy was pastor material and deserving of their love and support. A sentiment noted by all who joined in the beautiful service. Nancy Brubaker echoes the sentiment resounding within Roca’s devoted congregation members, “These people clearly love Lucy very much”.
